HVAC Duct In-Factory Pressure Testing
We can and do pre-test ducting before it is delivered to site. This saves time and money during the install process and provides peace-of-mind for building project managers under time and quality pressure.

ARLO Express Sheetmetals: HVAC Ducting – Factory Pressure Testing
Here we are in the ARLO Express workshop and we have some pressure testing to do.
Pressure testing in the factory will save time and money for our customer on-site.
We test against an allowed leakage rate and record the actual rate and the percentage loss. In this case it’s just 0.35% - well below the 3% allowed.
There is another test we can do if we’re unsure and want to test further: the smoke test. With HVAC ducting it’s never completely sealed. There are always small leaks, but we just need to minimize them.
This is a smoke pencil and it’s a good way to find small leaks.
You’ll see there, there is a little bit of a leak, where the smoke is blowing out a little bit more. Not much at all. We test right along the seam, and you can see it’s not blowing out. Back up the duct join and it’s not blowing out as you can see.
There is a little bit of air blowing out, but the test showed a 0.35% air flow loss – well below the target of 3%.
